The Analysis of the Spiritual Aspects of Light and Color in Five Ashura Works by Ustād Farshchian Based on the Views of Suhrawardi and Najm al-Din Kubra

Abstract
The work “The Evening of Ashura” has a profound impact on the hearts of those devoted to Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) and has attained a special place as a visual symbol of the Ashura event during the days of Muharram; however, this emotional connection is also observable in other Ashura works by Master Mahmoud Farshchian, works that depict that historical event in the form of five colorful panels. This research aims to examine and elucidate the concept of light and color in five Ashura works by Mahmoud Farshchian from the perspective of Islamic mysticism and in light of the views of Suhrawardi and Najm al-Din Kubra. The research method employed in this study is descriptive-analytical and fundamental in nature, with information gathered through library resources. The main question of the research is: “What spiritual and religious concepts do light and color evoke in Farshchian’s Ashura works?” To answer this question, the elements of light and color in the selected works have been analyzed and compared with the mystical viewpoints of Suhrawardi and Najm al-Din Kubra. The findings indicate that a semantic correlation can be established between the visual concepts of these works and the mystical thoughts of the two thinkers. This correlation reflects the influence of Islamic mysticism and the ideas of mystics on the mind and creativity of the artist; an influence that manifests not instantaneously, but through the process of creating the work and through the artist’s inner inspirations and beliefs.
