Abstract
One of the important works of the German Islamist, Joseph van Ess, is the book entitled Theology and Society. A part of the first volume of this book deals with an explanation of the theological views of Shi’a. One of the Shi’a sects discussed is the Rāfiḍī Shi’a. The accurate recognition of the concept of Rāfiḍī, the definition, the scope of its instances, and even the creeds attributed to the Rāfiḍīs requires careful examination and juxtaposition of the author's scattered materials. The present article has analyzed and explored the collection of materials attributed to the Rāfiḍīs in terms of documents and contents using a “library” and “documentary analysis” method. The findings of the research show that many of the materials mentioned are documented by the Sunnite books and even with some weak chain of authorities. Besides, in those cases where the Shi‘a sources have been adduced, sometimes they are based on weak documents or the writer have ignored the evidence, interpreting the texts arbitrarily and, in some cases, cutting the hadith that leads to a misunderstanding of it. His materials have been adduced by the orientalists and require review and evaluation.
