In view of the historical course of the events in early years of Islam in relation to the actions of some of the great companions of the Prophet, the Umayyads, with their propagation system, claimed that the Prophet’s companions had no intellectual and emotional relations with the Prophet’s Household; rather, they were in opposition to one another. Especially after the events of the battles of Jamal and Seffin, this claim aggravated the opposition. But what is the truth thereof? Were the Prophet’s companions opposing his Household? Under Mu’awiya and the Umayyads, the Umayyad politicians resorted to that claim, and they spread and institutionalized the idea of that opposition in the society. They did so to put the Prophet’s Household versus the Muslims to spread hatred among them. However, many of the Prophet’s companions, whether the Emigrants or the Helpers, were devotees of the Prophet’s Household and their real proponents, and played an important role in spreading and institutionalizing Shiism among the Muslims. Many of them were martyred under the command of Imam Ali, and many remained firmly partial to him. The Prophet’s Household also, contrary to what the Umayyads wished, took a positive position towards the Prophet’s companions in general – except a minor group – and would avoid actions or speeches which were in line with the Umayyads’ goals or were divisive. This, however, does not mean that we neglect the minor group hostile towards Imam Ali and the Prophet’s Household. Besides, introducing that minority as the majority of the companions or neglecting the positive position of the majority is also a mistake. The Umayyads, however, were seeking such an idea, and gained their political motto with the murder of Uthman, furthering their goals. Nevertheless, there is negligence among the proponents of both Shiite and Sunnite religious belief, causing them to spread the idea of the opposition between the Prophet’s companions and the Prophet’s Household.
