Nakhl-gardāni: An Artistic Popular-Social Narration of Death

Abstract
Nakhl-gardāni shows an aspect of the Shia’s religious history and is a dramatic form of the Iranian people’s belief that shows a historical event in the realm of the life and death of the saints. In the present study, the investigations show that although the rite of nakhl-gardāni apparently exhibits, in its collaborative performance, the concept of death, it is a rite of rebirth in its conceptual interpretation. Every year, by exhibiting the nakhl (palm tree) and animating the religious approach of the work, the rite presents evading death and wishing immortality in the historical experience of Ashura incident, while preparing the collective context for the social rites. This is done by preparing the ground and offering a model wherein the artist’s message becomes understandable (as a symbol) for the people, without any mediator and any interpretation, by being placed in a ritual-functional container; and they find out the religious beliefs and values and are reborn internally in the course of this performance and by decoding that work during their presence in the circular arena of the tekya (the place wherein the ritual performance is done).
